Edge Analytics Can Change the Way You Monitor Assets

Continuous online monitoring has been limited to critical plant assets due to high installation costs and complexity. Expertise was required to understand vibration data from these systems, and combining it with process data was only possible in the control room.

However, the AMS Asset Monitor changes this. It's an edge analytics device that utilizes CHARMs-based technology to collect both vibration and process data from balance-of-plant assets. It applies embedded auto analytics to identify common faults and alert personnel. Operations, process, and reliability staff can all monitor plant assets with ease, and everything needed to get started is included within the AMS Asset Monitor.

Pumps

Pumps

Pumps are crucial for industrial processes, but degrade from the first day of use. They contribute 7% to maintenance costs and cause 0.2% of production losses. Despite their seemingly small impact, pumps represent over $500 million in investments in the 150 U.S. refineries and are critical for maintaining production schedules.

Motors

Motors

AC induction motors make up over 90% of installed motor capacity and come in both single-phase and polyphase configurations, ranging from less than 1 to over 10,000 horsepower. They are often used as an integrated direct drive, powering important plant assets like impellers (fans, blowers, pumps) mounted directly on the motor shaft.

AMS Asset Monitor

The AMS Asset Monitor is a device that manages pervasive sensing, offering prediction, protection, and process monitoring capabilities. It is designed to be mounted at the asset, which reduces cabling requirements and installation costs. The monitor can accommodate up to 12 CHARMs, including Vibration CHARMs for vibration monitoring and DeltaV CHARMs for process inputs. Multiple units can be daisy-chained together to extend asset coverage for larger systems.

The AMS Asset Monitor also features an internal Logic Studio with pre-programmed application solutions for easy analysis and alert reporting. It can be configured to send overall asset health status and alerts to Emerson's Plantweb Optics asset performance platform, while detailed asset data can be accessed through OPC UA and Modbus TCP/IP. The monitor's Asset Studio interface, which is web-served, can provide detailed asset information on a user's mobile device or desktop thin client.
